Getting FSSAI License is necessary to start a food business in India according to Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India was established by this Act for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption and for matters connected therewith.

There are two category of Licenses.

Central License is issued for Businesses having turnover of more than 20 Crore. Also it is mandatory to take central license for E-Commerce firms and for Export/Import Businesses. For all other purposes, State license is enough.
